Does filling out a FAFSA obligate my parents to pay for my school?

Does filling out a FAFSA obligate my parents to pay for my school?

No. If you are considered dependent (or in some cases independent), you must provide parental information to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). However, providing that information on the FAFSA does not obligate your parent(s) to pay for your education.

The information you report on your FAFSA is used to calculate your EFC. Schools use the EFC to determine your eligibility for federal student aid and how much aid from federal and other sources you may be able to receive.

Providing your parents' information does not require them to support you in any way. However, it will help you be considered for as many sources of financial aid as possible. If you have special circumstances that you don't feel are captured by your FAFSA information, you can talk with the financial aid office at your school about them.
